Guided tour - South africa, from Cape Town to Port Elizabeth
Walter invites you to discover the south african peninsula just before you enter the big 5 conservation program.
You will travel from the western to the Eastern Cape in a 12 seats minibus and you will take part in different excursions (included in your package). Sightseeing of magnificient natural sites and wildlife observation of the two species part of the Big 7: the great white shark and the southern right whale.
The one week tour begins in cape town and finishes at Addo, a town near to the Port Elizabeth. You will be driven at the end of your stay to the game reserve offering the conservation program in South Africa.
This tour includes transportation, accommodation, breakfasts and dinners, as well as various excursions offered throughout.
Day 1 – Monday – Cape Town
Arrival in Cape Town. You are greeted at the airport by Walter, your guide during the tour and you will be droped off at the Ashanti lodge with your luggage.
There will be leisure time in the afternoon and evening. You can choose to visit Cape Town, nicknamed the “Mother City”. Walter will drop you off and pick you up at the location of your choice around your hostel. Example of places where you can go are the beach, the seaside with its shops and restaurants or the beautiful scenic road “Chapman Peak Road”.
Day 2 – Tuesday – Cape Town
In the morning, you will discover Cape Town and have leisure time.
After lunch, Walter offers a 3-hour tour to discover the Cape Peninsula and the Cape of Good Hope followed by a two hour excursion in the Table Mountain, using the cableway to enjoy the breathtaking view on the bay.
Day 3 – Wednesday – Cape Town
On Wednesday morning, you will have the opportunity to continue your discovery of the city if you wish. Walter offers an historic tour with visit of the Apartheid Museum. You can also choose to go shopping or to rest before the afternoon excursion.
At 2:00pm, you will discover Robben Island (depending on weather conditions), the island where Nelson Mandela was interned that is now part of the UNESCO World Heritage List. It was used as a prison, leprosarium, psychiatric hospital and military defense post. In the 20th century, black opponents of the apartheid sentenced to long terms were interned there, including three future South African presidents (Nelson Mandela, Kgalema Motlanthe and Jacob Zuma).
At night, you will have dinner at the Ashanti lodge, Cape Town.
Day 4 – Thursday – Cape Town to Gansbaai (163 km)
You will depart from Cape Town at 5:00 am and arrive at the Hermanus seaside resort at 7:00 am. This city is an excellent place to observe cetaceans.
This day will be centered around marine animals! You go whale watching of two hours. Dolphins, humpback whales, southern right whales and Bryde’s whales can be seen there.
In the afternoon, you will meet the great white sharks in Gansbaai with White Shark Projects. You can observe them by cage diving or directly from the boat if you do not want to dive. This organization respects the ethical rules set by the WWF to observe white sharks.
Return at 5:00 pm and stay overnight at the Gansbaai Town Lodge.
Day 5 – Friday – Gansbaai to Oudtshoorn (358 km)
You leave in the early morning at 6:00 am to go to Oudsthoorn. Upon your arrival, you will say hello to the ostriches of the farm of Highgate (2hrs).
In the afternoon, you can visit the Caves of Cango or enjoy your free time.
Your night will be spent in Oudtshoorn at the Kleinplaas resort.
Day 6 – Saturday – Oudtshoorn to Jeffreys Bay (292 km)
After your breakfast, Walter will guide you to Tsitsikamma National Park. This park is considered as one of the most beautiful parks of South Africa, and is located on the famous Garden Route. This has been a marine and forest protected area since 1964. You will explore it by followings tracks, which include suspended walkways. Your visit will end in front of the “big tree”, which is 800 years old and 36 meters high.
In the afternoon, you can choose your activity: zip lining or riding segways in the park.
You will spend your evening in Jeffreys Bay, a city known for hosting international surfing competitions. You will stay at the Island Vibe Jeffreys Bay hostel, which is located on the beach.
Day 7 – Sunday – Jeffreys Bay to Addo (136 km)
After your breakfast – keep in mind that the pancakes with bacon or fruits are truly delicious – you will go on an excursion (2h). Again, Walter gives you the choice between 3 activities: horseback riding along the beach, surfing or quad driving.
The afternoon is spent in the city of Addo, driving via Port Elizabeth. This is where you can buy handcrafts in “Arts & Crafts” markets.
In the evening you will stay at the Avoca River Cabins in the city of Addo.
Day 8 – Monday – Addo to the Nature Conservation Program (46 km)
After your breakfast at the lodge, you will do a 4 to 5 hours game drive in the Addo Elephant National Park. This park was founded in 1931, to save the 11 elephants that were left in the area at that time (they decimated because of massive hunting). Today, thanks to their efforts, more than 600 elephants and many other mammals are present in the park.
You will finally be taken to the game reserve for the start of your eco-volunteering in the Big 5 program – arrival is around 2:00 pm.
At the end of your eco-volunteering program, Walter will pick you up and transfer you to the Port Elizabeth Airport.
Those whose flight leave in the late afternoon / evening can be dropped off wherever they want in Port Elizabeth before their departure. Their luggage will be stored in the meantime.
During the tour, accomodations are double rooms. Your luggage will be transported in a secure trailer throughout the week.

He will drive you to different places to visit and will be available to answer your questions or drive you to any special spot during your leisure time.
